The story in Cartwheel is very much of our time. Lily's case becomes an international sensation because of Facebook, blogs, and the way shocking news and information can travel around the world within minutes. Social media evidence plays a big role in Cartwheel. Does this change the way you look at your own social media usage?

It doesn't change the way I look at it, but it certainly reminded me of the importance of realizing that things you post on the spur of the moment can come back to haunt you and that it's important to be a "responsible" user of social media.

Social media is a way to connect people in all sorts of ways. However, its positives can be countered by its negatives and one has to be very careful of what one writes or believes.

Definitely. Things can be misconstrued when read by people who weren't there.

Social Media is our way of life now. It can be good or bad and I don't think any of us have full knowledge of how it impacts our lives in so many ways. So little remains confidential any more.

No, because I am very responsible about the way I use social media.

I've always been careful about what I write on the internet, but it is still possible to be misunderstood. When I was teaching, I would write letters to parents etc. as clearly as I could, and still They I was misunderstood at times.

It most certainly did, from the beginning of general usage of Facebook. All the negatives of social media only keeps me away from it. I'm not afraid of it--just feel it's something else I'd have to manage and at my age I have enough of that! Too much privacy is violated by those who use Facebook, etc., including my adult children and grandchildren. I'm now of the past generation--brings to mind my mother and her never using the microwave we got for her to save time and all the other great stuff a microwave can do.

I thought the "social media" was an additional "character" in the book. Clues, allusions, conversations, random thoughts are all parsed and used against Lily. It truly did manifest the "Big Brother Is Watching" concept.

I'm not sure the cutesy name for my generation (Y? Me?) but I'm 28 years old so I feel like I have an advantage to experiencing childhood before the introduction of computers in every home and social networking sites didn't come until I was in college. Because of this, I was able to know to guard myself and my information online, whereas my younger cousins and family friends do not. I'm shocked that younger "tweens" nowadays have full public profiles, share photos, tweet, etc. for anybody to see. It's definitely not something I would do, I keep all of my accounts as private or friends-only. My theory is that if I wouldn't want my mom or a future boss to see it, then I shouldn't put it out there, especially in the public eye.
Reading about the social media in the novel and how it was all exposed makes me glad that mine is kept privileged. Of course, even with a subpoena, my private photos or emails could be accessed... so that's not saying much.

I have read two novels this month pointing to the current practice of private email and other computer data being subject to subpoena in a criminal case. I don't intend to commit crimes but it still gave me pause. All the comments about keeping privacy settings in mind, etc are relevant and especially important is the point that younger people aren't aware of the importance of those settings. That made me wonder why those things are not being taught both at home and school. It is actually a large issue and another case where advances in technology get ahead of personal responsibility. I also wondered how anyone in the world could get a fair trial these days when news and opinions can travel so fast. I wonder if this is addressed in jury selection--haven't been called for jury duty for a while. This is a good question and the author's inclusion of the issue was brilliant, I thought.
