Honestly, at first, I think it was a sort of competition with her. Can I attract him before he is attracted to Katy?
What's funny is that he was attracted to her from the first ... didn't even have the fling with her she kept accusing him of. I think the fact that he was wealthy and reclusive brought out her competitiveness too. Can I draw him out when no one else has been able to do this? Also, despite her efforts to look very suave and urbane, the fact that her host family introduced him to the girls, made him seem "safe" to Lily, where even she might have been a little leery of picking up a guy in a bar.

I think Lily was attracted the Sebastien because he seemed like he would make a good story. I know when I was her age, when my friends and I went out to meet men we always had in our minds the fun we would have talking about our adventures. Sometimes, often, that was more fun than actually spending time with whatever man we found ourselves with. I also think that Sebastien also has the attractive quality of being someone that needs to be taken care of.

The relationship with Sebastian didn't make sense to me. In my opinion, he was simply too strange for anyone's taste. My guess is that the author wanted us to see him as a tortured soul who Lily found interesting. Frankly I found his character to be overdone and unbelievable.

I think something Sebastien & Lily had in common was they both had trouble forming relationships with peers. Add to that Lily seems to be more comfortable with men. Her father, Carlos, Sebastien were all people that she could banter with supporting her intellectual spirit. Sebastien was as others have said convenient, a challenge, and an odd one all of this very interesting to a college girl.

Lily was young but yet she thought she was much more informed about life (and people) then she actually was. While her family was dysfunctional, she did lead a sheltered and privileged life and was really thrown off guard when she met Katy and saw her as competition and wanted to outdo Katy. Lily seemed to rush into things and them became quickly disillusioned with them and then did not know how to reconcile those feeling. Sebastien was there and he was a challenge that Lily thought she could conquer.

I think he was different and she was fighting very hard not to be normal and ordinary. He was smart which she also fancied . All of these were things she did not find in Katy. Once Sebastien became truly enamored by her he became a bit more ordinary and she was less interested. I don't think she liked to be stifled by his reclusiveness either.
