What do the men who love the Supremes - James, Richmond, Lester, and Chick - give to the women they love? Why are the women able to look past their failings? Could you?

I think if we truly love someone we can look past most of their failings. However, I don't think I could stand to live with someone who was openly being unfaithful.
James gives softness and strength to Odette. Richmond provided prestige and initially a self-esteem boost through bringing Clarice out from being a wallflower to someone who was with the most popular guy in school.
Lester provided stability and Chick provided true love and risky behavior.

I think that James and Odette are the couple that most people want to be. Odette doesn't understand at first why James is interested in her, but he studies her on those early dates and evenings at Earls and he knows that he loves her early on. They seem to have been happy and steady over all of the years. Richmond is supportive of Odette, I can't really remember any failings that he might have had though I'm sure he had some.
I agree with tillie about Richmond. It did seem that Richmond, being the star football player, gave Clarice more self esteem and confidence. The only reason I can think of for her staying with Richmond is that she really loved him and hoped for years that he would change. Clarice also seemed to be a bit of perfectionist, so maybe it took her a long time to figure out that he wasn't going to change and her marriage wasn't going to be what she hoped.
I think Barbara Jean met her true love when she met Chick. It was not socially acceptable at the time and things between them got mixed up. Lester was the man her mom thought she should marry. Lester's ability to love Barbara Jean and her child unconditionally, despite the fact that Barbara Jean did not love him and Adam was not his child, says a lot about his character. He also provided financial stability and allowed her to live many aspects of her life the way she wanted.

I loved the relationship between James and Odette - she was my favorite character. - liked Jeffs' summary of the relationship between all the couples - Lester was a good man and I certainly hope that Barbara Jean finds a degree of joy that her first marriage couldn't give her.
