Do you think Grace, Mac and Morris would have behaved differently today?

How do you interpret the triangle of Grace, Mac, and Morris? Do you think they would behave differently today? What would you have done in Grace’s place after she married Morris?

On the one hand, could be in our time - with some may agree are less stringent morals - Mac and Grace would have had an affair. Then again, it's very dependent on the person, I think. It's hard to judge what two people would or wouldn't do in that sort of situation.

If this had taken place today, they probably would have not only had an affair but have gotten their own TV show to broadcast it live. But I agree with lisag that it depends on the people and maybe they would have seen what was happening and avoided each other.

It says a lot about the characters of these two people that they didn't give in - especially Grace's character. I may not have given her enough credit for her strength before but I'm coming to realize she was wholly committed to her marriage, no matter how unhappy it was. In another thread I was talking about the divorce rate then and now. Grace is an example of the true meaning behind the vows we see trampled on everywhere. Look at Hollywood! At least that's how the rich, beautiful people operate and not a good standard to judge the rest of us by. But patience isn't a strong suit in our society.

Grace was the strong one of the marriage and poor Mac only could ride along. I would have liked to have seen him be more assertive before Morris appeared. But then, where would the story be?!

Forgive the author for jumping in, but you just appeared on my screen, Suzanne. I, too, wish Mac had been more assertive, but that was the point of his character. He was so psychologically wounded by his experiences in the war that he could barely face himself, let alone visit himself on a woman he loved. By the time he began to recover a bit it was too late. You won't be surprised to hear that many readers were rooting for them to have an affair.

I was rooting for Mac and Grace to find happiness but then what would have happened to Amy? Would it help ro know more about why Morris acts like he does?
