Absolutely agree that introverts can be good leaders. I think charisma probably plays too big a role in leadership (though this would depend on the area of leadership, e.g. church, politics, workplace), which perhaps results in some leaders being more charisma than substance. Introverts can be charismatic; it's just a different type of charisma.

President Obama, an introvert, is a prime example of one who can make a charismatic leader. The author had a great article about leadership and introverts in The New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/16/opinion/sunday/introverts-make-great-leaders-too.html

Absolutely. Introverts can become performers quite easily and rise to the occasion to lead people. They will need their down time and can't keep up the performing pace for an extended period.

As an introvert myself, I have to say that introverts can be good leaders. However, for me, it has to be a situation that I am extremely comfortable with and cannot be something that has been forced upon me. Like all things, there are so many degrees. For instance, my sister is an introvert but she is an actress and is comfortable going in front of all of people, even naked! I think in some ways, she leaves her self and truly becomes someone different. Going on stage in front of people is terrifying to me

Yes, I believe introverts can be thoughtful and weigh options (as is the nature of introverts). These qualities are essential in a good leader. When I think fo soemone being charismatic, I think of people like JFK, Bill Clinto and Martin Luther King Jr. These were all great orators. I don't think introverts can be naturally great orators, but as in the examples like Dale Carnegie, they can learn to become great speakers and charismatic as a result.

Absolutely! The ability to stop and listen before reacting is something I really value in a leader.

Oh yes - Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Al Gore, and Abraham Lincoln come to mind.

Yes, I do agree with her premise, providing that it is recognized that not all leaders are the same. While extroverts may lead with strong opinions, quick decisions and charisma masquerading as knowledge, the introvert can lead by encouraging a team to express their own opinions one by one, be thoughtful about making an important decision and encourage the sharing of knowledge in a way which will help a group to make a clear, guided decision which is best in the long term for those involved.
