Richard and Laura come from small town Maine, but could they have come from any small town, spending a weekend in any big city?

Both Richard and Laura spent most of their lives in Maine, in small towns with lots of gossip and not much financial opportunity. Could these characters come from any small town, spending a weekend in any big city? Why, or why not?

Yes, in this case I don't think it matters where they came from. Both were ready for this.

Yes, the city atmosphere plays a big role in terms of setting. Being in a fresh exciting environment allows the characters to gain a new perspective on life 's possibilities.

I don't think the character had to come from a small town. Just getting out of familiar territory often prompts new behavior. Laura was in need of a change.

I agree with Retired Reader, it just needed to convey the sense of her "leaving her comfort zone." That could have been conveyed in many ways, but in this case it was a trip from a small town to a city that provided that sense for her.

Both could have come from any small town in the country. The fact that Laura felt comfortable in a different style of clothing when she was in Boston and wanted Richard to also change his clothing style gave them the freedom to become a citizen of a big city. They'd not be stuck in the constrictive life of a small town.

I don't think it really matters where they came from. I think that they would be drawn together no matter where they came from. It was not their being from small towns that drew them together. They were both sad and disappointed with their lives. That was what attracted them in the beginning. They were able to explore their commonalities with one another, but they went way beyond exchanging bits and pieces of their lives.

I agree with "CoventryReader". The town didn't matter--it could have been anywhere, USA. I was intrigued by the many references to "that's Maine for you". Do all those from Maine think their state is so isolated and unique?

I agree with most here. The place didn't matter. Any small town to a bigger city would have worked.

Oh yes...I think it could happen anywhere...as long as there was enough distance from their home town/

They could have come from any place. They just needed to get into another space, another place, and find their "other voice". To be in another city for a specific reason was important..they did not have to feel that they were just running away from their families. Changing their costumes also helped change their personal images. The pace of their time together was also important. Their personalities were also non-threatening.
