How does the theme of first relationships play a part in Five Days?

Ben, Sally, Billy, and even Laura are in some ways defined by their first relationships. How does this theme play an important part of the novel?

Neither Laura and Richard was emotionally free from his/her first relationship when they committed to their marriages. This contributed greatly to the failure of both marriages.

in addition to what Shirleyl posted, Ben's first relationship ended badly and so did Sally's. But that is pretty realistic, very few people end up with the person in their first relationship. And because Laura's ended the way it did, with Eric's death, she didn't really know how it might have played out. And Richard just seemed flawed to me because he had no backbone to go his own way.
