Mutti agrees to put food out for the passing Jewish prisoners even though it’s dangerous and she can barely feed her family. Why do you think she does it? Would you have done the same thing?

I think Mutti was a deeply kind and responsible person. She was also strong minded. She knew what was right and did it. Many times in life all of us know what is right but various fears drive us from acting on it. I would like to think I would put food out but, since I've never been in a fear for your life situation, I'm not sure. My heart would say yes.

Mutti knew that the Jews were prisoners unfairly, and was willing to take the risk. I would like to think that I would have done the same thing, but I don't see myself as that courageous, and I would have considered the needs of my own family first.

I'd like to think I would have done the same, as well. Mutti knew in her heart this was right and good. Her humanity led her to make what I believe was the right choice.

I agree with everything expressed above. I would hope I would do the same but would I?

She saw how they were starving and she wanted to help them. She had worked for a Jewish family so perhaps she was thinking of them and hoped someone was being kind to them whereever they were.
I hope I would have the courage to do the same.

I think Mutti put out food because that was the humane thing to do and something she was able to do under the circumstances. It did place her family and herself in danger, but it appeared that Mutti was careful and took a calculated risk. On the other hand, Christine's actions placed her family and Isaac's family in danger in a different way - when she visited Isaac's family's home she called attention to them; when she met him after curfew in the cellar, she put them both at risk; when she hid him in the attic without telling anyone, she put her entire family at risk; when she called out to Isaac at the camp and threw him food, she put him at risk. I did not see these acts as courageous on her part, but foolhardy. It seemed the action of a willful girl who believed that being in love was the most important thing in the world and justified everything. I believed that if the entire family had known about Isaac's escape, they might have been more successful at hiding him.
