Cover

What impressions to do you have when you view the cover of this novel?

RE: Cover

The misty look over her face was so appropriate, mirroring the misty-ness of her mind. I think it's a lovely cover.

That fog over her head is a perfect visual of what dementia feels like. I have talked with Altzheimer's patients often. I am experiencing the first stages of Altzheimer's or dementia muyself and I definitely feel the fog. Sometimes it's worse than others but always there. It is a very appropriate visual display of a troubling experience.

How interesting! When I view the cover up close, I actually see the image of a woman-perhaps Jennifer-
But as I look at the cover, sat from across the room or from the table- there appears to be a" nothingness"
Maybe just a whisper of an image-the idea of fog is super...one really cannot " see" Jennifer or the deeds /
Actions of which she has been accused. Maybe this foggy image not only hides Jennifer and her actions from the real world, it also provides a cloud that keeps the reader from discovering the truth. A true mystery!

It is a good prelude to the story and actually depicts what happens when the mind starts to go. It was sad and appropriate

Oh, I like the fog image! And the fact that her head seems to be gradually fading away to nothingness reminds me of what an Alzheimer's caregiver once told me: that the hardest thing was watching the person you love slowly disappear before your eyes.

I love the cover, much like many of the discussion contributors. I feel that the blur over the woman's face, along with the exasperated turn of her head portray the struggle and loss of losing identity along with memory. It is a hauntingly beautiful and tragic image, that sets the feel and mood for what follows.

RE: What do you think of the cover?

We REALLY struggled over the cover! The publisher at Grove, Morgan Entrekin, took a personal interest in making sure it was right--and rejected covers from half a dozen very talented designers. My editor called me in a semi-panic because the book needed to go to press and we didn't have a cover. They had been working with graphics, not photographs, so I sent her the image of a stamp issued by the USPS a couple of years ago that benefited the Alzheimer's Association. It was a haunting photograph, slightly blurred, of a woman in side profile. At that point, Grove started bringing in older women to photograph, but none suited Morgan's taste. AT one point, he sent staffers out onto the streets of New York to pull in older women as candidates! Finally, they did find a model who they felt worked. I personally love the result.
