Does Mary Anne ever think of herself as brave?

Mary Anne doesn’t believe her travels to war-torn countries were brave. In what ways is Mary Anne brave during her cancer treatments? Does she ever come to think of herself as brave?

No, I do not think that she ever considers herself brave. In fact, I think she (and many mothers) act tough throughout an illness when she knows she is facing the end because she does not want to cry. She does not want her family to break down and start sobbing either.

I don't think that Mary Anne thought of herself as brave. I do believe that she did not want to be defined by her illness. She seemed to have the conviction to continue with her life despite her "not so good" days and celebrate life as long as she could.

No, I think she just did what she felt she needed to do whether it was traveling to Afghanistan or facing cancer. Many people told me I was brave for going to Iraq to work with the Iraqi Air Force and to travel to the Middle East when there is so much unrest but I just always felt I was doing what I needed to do at the time. You just do it.

Bravery is different things to different people. I think bravery is coming to terms with the limiting factors in your own life and going forth anyway, determined to live the best life you can. How do you think Mary Anne would have determined bravery? How would Will have defined it?

No, I don't think Mary Anne thinks of herself as brave. I think she knows what has to be done and tackles what is in front of her with as much zest as she is able to muster. But I think she's brave, very brave; she inspires me.

Paula, I'm sure Will would just point to his mother as an example of bravery and I agree with your definition of brave. It's about not letting anything stop you from pursuing your dream, no matter how scared you may feel and despite limiting factors.
