RE: What did the Peter Pan inscription mean to you?

Having read the book well over a month ago and then given it to my daughter who is now almost to the end, I enlisted her help on this one. She gave me this wonderful analysis:

"Vivien is the female version of Peter Pan who as a child was able to live in a world of fantasy (seeing the cracks in the earth), flaunts the establishment and takes care of orphans (lost boys); Jimmy is Wendy in male
format--he takes care of everyone (Dolly, Vivien, father, and orphans). Dolly is Tinker-belle: during the Blitz she sees only what she wants to see and is blinded by jealousy. When everything falls apart,, she blames those around her and is too egocentric to see how her actions could and do affect others."

"The reader lives a 1000 lives before he dies. The [person] who never reads lives only one."
George R.R. Martin.

Wow, Sandrah, what a great post. I never in a million years would have made that connection, but after reading what your daughter had to say about it, I wonder how I missed the parallels. Thanks much for that!

I hadn't really thought about the significance other than Vivien gave Jimmy something she really valued. Sandrah's post, gave me something to think about, also.

Sandrah's post is great insight into the use of that particular book in the story.

The inscription reflects how Vivien's friendship with Jimmy provided some light into her very dark life.

What a bit of luck that Vivian's gift to Jimmy came back to her as a gift. It served as a way to remember the tiny piece of her TRUE past that brought her happiness.
