When posting to this forum, I encourage you to converse as you would if you were having a live conversation. In other words, please avoid very short answers and always feel free to expand on your points of view - just as you would in a live conversation. And, just as you would if you were talking in a group, you can respond to the other comments already posted, not just the question!

Please try to avoid very short posts such as "I agree with Joan" - please always try to add value to the conversation by expanding on why you agree - otherwise it's very easy for the conversation to devolve to a series of one line comments, which tends to make for rather dull reading.

If there's something you'd like to discuss but the present topics don't cover it, you can create a new topic by clicking the "New Topic" button at the top of the page.

Thank you!

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

I was drawn in immediately and felt empathy with the characters and situation until about 3/4 of the way through. At this point I think the author felt obliged to tie up every loose thread and create an unrealistic "action" ending, which did not fit in with the satirical, witty and meaningful first part of the book. If the author had only ended the book after the first time the Major and Ms. Ali go away together and walk off hand in hand the next morning. We didn't need the faux and manipulated ending!

RE: Please read before posting

There's no other word to describe this book except "charming". My mother and I never liked to read the same kind of books and this one is finally one I think I could have recommended to her with confidence. I especially liked the author's ability to present the personality of Major Pettigrew in such a way that I felt as one with him as he went through his daily adventures. Just a delightful read.
