There are several gaps between groups and characters--some may be chasms--such as between Japanese and Japanese-Americans (particularly Kent and his parents); Japanese and Americans; Kent and TJ; TJ and his father. And where there are gaps we need bridges to span them. Maddie tried to bridge some, some were not crossed until the birth of Suzie. I think the scarlet leaves refers to the poem by Deanna Nikaido that opens Part One.
