In the 1940s, interracial marriage was illegal in more than thirty American states. Given expectations placed on Caucasian females during this conservative era, how do you feel about Maddie's hesitation early in her relationship with Lane? Would you have made the same daring choices that she did over the course of the war?

I think Maddie's hesitation is understandable--she had a lot of issues in her life: her father's illness, her brother, her future as a musician--besides the racial issue. If I felt about someone as Maddie felt about Lane I would have married him. I can't see myself going into the internment camp, but I would surely have been there waiting for him! Maddie was also brave to go, knowing how Lane's mother felt about her.

I agree with DorothyT: I found Maddie's hesitation to be totally understandable. In addition, I struggled a bit to understand her decision to go to the internment camp at all. It seemed a little impulsive to me. I admired her for it, but I don't know if she totally understood what she was getting herself into and if she had, would she have made a different choice?

I don't think Maddie did understand what she was getting into by going to the internment camp! But, by the same token, she was young and very much in love. Her father was not "there" for her. The lady who might have helped financially with going to Julliard had withdrawn her support. Her brother had enlisted. She wanted to be with family and what was left of "family" was in the internment camp! I might have gone, too.

I think Maddie's choice was brave but I know nothing would have deterred me from being with my young love. As Maddie did I too followed my husbands path before I pursued my own. Times have changed!
