Were there extra "mothers" in your life? What role did they play in making you who you are?

In Cassie’s absence, Judy is mothered by three women – her grandmother, Lee Ann’s mother, and Treva. Were there extra "mothers" in your life? What role did they play in making you who you are?

RE: Were there extra "mothers" in your life? What role did they play in making you who you are?

I came from a family of eight children with absolutely great parents. I still had and still have one older sister who was kind of my extra mother. As you can imagine, my mom was pretty busy so the extra time and individaul focus on me even though I was seven years younger by one of my older sisters was really special. She always tried to get special books for me and be sure I got to go places when my parents were too busy.
Even after she married and had her own family she always kept tabs on me and still does even though we live many states apart.

My own mother was a good mother. My own mom was caring, loving and had a strong faith. I have come to realize she was not as strong as I thought she was and have gained strength of character from other women in my life. I did have several other women in my life that I treasured and called Mom. One such lady came into my life just a few short years ago and was unfortunately taken from me all too soon. She was a woman of faith and put her faith into action every day. She is the kind of woman I aspire to be - a wonderful, caring, strong woman of faith.

My mother had a twin sister who was very much like a second mother to me. My Aunt always tried to teach me to knit, but while I could crochet, knitting remained a mystery no matter how hard she tried. After she died, my Uncle gave me all of her knitting supplies and I taught myself to knit in her honor. She also shared a love of reading and while our taste in books was very different, I enjoyed finding her paperback romance novels by the bagful. I felt very lucky that I had two moms and miss my Aunt tremendously. I try to concentrate on making the most of the time I spend with my mother who misses her sister even more.

My mother became ill when I was 10 and couldn't cope with lifes difficulties for many years. I was lucky enough to have run into several women who helped to make me realize my own self worth and give me confidence that I carry with me. One of the key elements that helped to shape me was a woman I adored who once said to me "you are no better or no worse than anyone else" These words have guided me forever. I not only value myself, but I respect all people regardless of their "station" in life.

Interesting question. In my case, I had one loving mother, but my father left home when I was young. Over the course of my live, I had several substitute fathers, including my step-father, who has now been married to my mother for more than 25 years. Also, I have been lucky enough to have many male and female mentors in my career. I think we all need an extensive support system, even when we come from happy homes.
