RE: Five Days by Douglas Kennedy

Hi Carolyn
There should have been an insert with the book confirming when the discussion will start - and, yes, it is due to start on May 6th or 7th. See [link]http://www.bookbrowse.com/onlinebookclub[/link] for a list of all upcoming discussions and their start dates.

I just finished reading FIVE DAYS by Douglas Kennedy. I'm on my way to read anything else by him. The discussion opens May 6th is that correct. Can hardly wait to discuss the characters of this book.

RE: How up to date is BookBrowse?

That is a rather broad question for a website that has over 100,000 pages of information and depends on the page you're looking at. If you look at the bottom of a bio or interview page you should see the date of that particular interview or the date that the bio was last updated. We aim to update the bios at least every 2-3 years.

Information related to the books is usually current at the time that book is published.

Information relating to books featured on our homepage will be current within about the last week to two weeks.

RE: Does anyone ever win the Wordplays?

Yes, they do! Combining the Wordplays and Giveaways we give away about 200 books each year, plus about another 40-50 as thank yous for taking part in surveys and the like. There's a link to the list of winners from the Wordplay and Giveaway pages.

Go to [link]http://www.bookbrowse.com/booktalk/forums.cfm?conferenceid=B188288C-FFAC-581F-C8F27E56676EE00F[/link] to see a list of recent winners.

In addition, BookBrowse members living in the USA are able to request books to review through First Impressions (those who take part tend to get about 3-4 books each year). Via First Impressions and the BookBrowse Book Club we give away more than 2000 books each year.

RE: Unable to find book when searching

Could you try again just searching on the words: Ivan Denisovich.
I just tried this and it worked for me.

The challenge for a computer is knowing what words are most important to a search result so when you enter a long search term such as "One Ordinary Day in One Extraordinary Life or One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" the search algorithm has trouble deciding which words are most important
and thus filled the first page of results with books that matched more common parts of the search string such as "Ordinary, Extraordinary, Life" and so forth.

As a general rule, if you're using an extremely advanced search tool such as Google's, which is the result of thousands of minds adding layers of sophistication over multiple years you can get away with entering longer and more complex search terms. But when dealing with smaller sites such as BookBrowse, your library website, and most bookstores you'll most likely get the result you want by entering the part of the search term that is most unique to that book.

Does that make sense? And more importantly, are you now able to add the book to your reading list?

Unable to find book when searching

I am unable to add One Ordinary Day in One Extraordinary Life or One Day in
the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Isaevich Solzhenitsyn to my reading
life from the internet search on the reading list page. That seems strange to me. How can I do
that? Thank you.

RE: I don't see enough male authors featured

Hi,

Are you looking at the website or just the twice monthly free newsletter? If the latter, keep in mind that that is a very small subset of our full content.

To be honest, as editor I've never applied a quota to any aspect of BookBrowse whether it be the ratio of male to female authors, fiction to nonfiction or between genres, we just go with the books that look the most interesting at the time. And time of year is a factor, as the publishers definitely have preferences as to what time of year they publish specific types of books, the most obvious being that they tend to focus strongly on fiction during the summer - thus, at this time of year there's a good chance that BookBrowse's recommendations will skew towards fiction too.

Even though we don't quota, it turns out that our male:female split is (or has been to date) almost exactly 50:50. I realized this a few months ago when a debate broke out in the media about why traditional literary mags tend to review so many more books by men than women, and that triggered me to analyze our own stats. You can read about this in my blog post: Why Literary Mags Review Three Times More Male Writers Than Female: [link]http://www.bookbrowse.com/blogs/editor/index.cfm/2011/2/11/Why-literary-mags-review-three-times-more-male-writers-than-female[/link]

I don't see enough male authors featured

I've been receiving your free newsletter for a few years. I've noticed a new preponderance of women authors in the reviews. I mostly relate to the male author outlooks, subjects, and writing styles.
