Autumn feels she’s “never more peaceful than when she’s baking.” Why do you suppose this is? Is there some activity you’ve taken up that engenders this feeling in you that you turn to when you’re stressed?

I know a lot of people who enjoy baking. The kitchen is a comfortable place for many. I think it makes them happy. They feel they are accomplishing a task that they can share the outcome with people they love and care for. Actually I read when I am stressed!

I think when someone is very skilled at something, like baking or knitting,the movements associated with that are just a natural reaction. Autumn does not have to think about every step she needs to take while mixing, rolling, or working her dough. This gives her mind time to wander, and she can kind of zone out or meditate without having to think too hard about what she is doing.

I don’t have cooking or sewing skills, but I like tasks like shoveling dirt or stones, walking, and on occasion cleaning (haha). My mind becomes quiet. The physical activity is also good because it wears me out.

When my brain needs a bit of a break, I like to do jigsaw puzzles. I find I can work on one for a couple of hours a pond come away refreshed.

I think if you can engage in an activity that occupies both your mind and motor skills, it can distract you from anxiety and worries. Baking, needlework, and gardening does that for me.

Baking for me is like getting into the 'zone'. I related well to Autumn. I also enjoy reading, obviously! :>}

Her baking allowed her to create something wonderful that others admired and wanted. A successful accomplishment makes one very happy.

I think baking can be such a creative experience. It can also take your mind away from things that are troubling you by doing something that takes thought and creativity. I loved that Autumn could bake for others and get that satisfying feeling of doing something good for others.

I think people are happiest when they are doing something they are good at and seem to have an innate talent for. On top of that her skill is something that she can share to provide comfort and joy to others and distract others from looking at the parts of her with which she is not comfortable.

Are we all the happiest when we are doing something we are good at doing or have a talent for? Mine is paper crafting, give me a stack of papers and I am content to create for hours on end. It makes me feel good to provide joy to others with my creations.

Being good at something or just really enjoying the learning part of something new is a means to relax and let your brain concentrate on a single activity. I listen to a lot of books to keep my mind focused while doing things I'm not so interested in - cleaning the house, laundry, washing dishes.

Autumn feels needed when she bakes. Regardless of where she is it brings her home. It is her way of reaching out and helping others. It is relaxing for her. I sleep when I am extremely stressed. It is my way of escaping. And I will often wake with a solution.
