Why do you think the author chose Odette as a narrator?

The chapters alternate between Odetteā€™s voice and that of a third-person narrator. Why do you think the author chose Odette as a narrator?

I think that Odette was the strongest character in the book and definitely the strongest of the Supremes. She had a fierceness about her and also the ability to get right to the heart of any matter. She was put in some scary situations when she was young and never failed to do the right thing no matter how terrifying.

Also, she could speak to dead people.

I agree. Odette's strength is a key component of the relationships in this book. In some ways, she holds everyone together so it's important to hear her point of view

I agree with both of you. Odette was not one to give in to fear or pressure, so she kept the action moving forward. And her connection to the ghosts allowed the author to use her to fill in lots of detail regarding the other characters.

She was my favorite character and, really, the most normal of the bunch. I suppose I identified with her far more so than I did with Clarice or Barbara Jean.

Odette was the strongest of the three and was basically the glue that held them together. She was the voice of sanity and reason. She gave cohesiveness to the group.

Also, the story was basically hers, but her relationships to the others was very important and the parts they played in her life was what helped get her through the toughest of times. I don't think one of the other characters would have worked as a narrator.

Because Odette was fearless, after all she was born in a sycamore tree, I feel the author could tap into a strong womans voice. It made the authors writing as a woman believable. There are characteristics of Odette that we would all like to have.

I agree with all of you. Odette was the strongest character, and the most "normal" of the three women. But isn't it ironic that she was the one who saw ghosts. Maybe the author is trying to tell us something.

Even before I scrolled past previous comments, my immediate response to this question was that Odette's ability to see the presence of people who had died gave her a special maturity/ strength/ and perspective. Odette helps the reader to see that some of the events which seem so important to mortals are tiny ripples in a river.

She was the most fully formed character. The other two had mothers who were such bad examples for daughters that they were struggling as adults. Odette was strong, happy, content with herself and her life, and able to be very funny. She was the center of the entire story.

Odette had that special power to "see beyond," and of course this provided interaction with her mother and Eleanor Roosevelt. I think her ability to see those who have passed on helped put a new perspective on everyday life.
