How do the characters' self-images shape their interactions with others? How do men's views differ from the women's?

When She Woke presents many competing views of a woman's proper role in society. How does the author reveal the female characters' views of themselves to the reader, and how do these self-images shape their interactions with others? How do the men's views differ from the women's, and from one another's, and how do these differences play out in the story?

RE: How do the characters' self-images shape their interactions with others? How do men's views differ from the women's?

Hannah's defining characteristic at the beginning of the story is her lack of agency, aside from the single act she takes of having an abortion, which acts as a break with her prior life. She sees herself only in the context of being someone who has shamed her family. However, as the story progresses, she begins to understand that she has the power to make decisions and take actions as a matter of course and that making such decisions does not have to be as forbidden as was her first action of having the abortion.

At first the women are portrayed in the old role of being subservient to the man. Her role is to keep the house and bear children. The men are also portrayed in this role. But then as the story broadens to a wider setting, Hannah encounters women and men who think and act differently.
