The rusted-on loyalties of family members to each other are key in this novel. Do you think Dolly's feelings of unease about her own family contribute to her love of playing make-believe?

Probably, but I think she just had the narcissist's belief that she was more special than everyone else and therefore deserved a better than average life. I found that really unattractive in her.

I'd forgotten about Dolly's mother. She was certainly something, wasn't she? Talk about allowing one's personality to be totally consumed by one's spouse! I'm sure that's how it was "back in the day," but I can certainly understand how it added to Dolly frustration.

I found it so interesting that both Dolly and Vivian used daydreaming to make their lives more acceptable to their own ideals. That was the problem and why those 2 were the worst two that could possibly have come together. They could not help each other because neither could see the other person as real. I think they barely understood themselves although Vivian gained strength through her second marriage.
