Why did Caleb not help Noa at trial? Does Noa regret her relationship with him?

Why did Caleb not help Noa at trial? What was so important to him that he wouldn't risk disclosing Marlene's involvement? Is he weak and selfish, or simply unable to understand the ramifications of his actions? Does Noa regret her relationship with him?

He was protecting himself.

It was hard to tell at times, but it didn't seem like Noa regretted her relationship with Caleb. Her desire to be wanted by her father was as powerful as it is for almost any person.

I agree that Noa's desire to have a relationship with her father was very powerful. I do think that she regretted her relationship with him, though, especially after she found out that he told Sarah about Noa's killing of Persephone. Noa was so hurt by the people she loved that this final betrayal was more "proof" to Noa that she didn't deserve to live.

That's a good point, janzr. She must have regretted telling her father about Persephone at the least and probably did regret her relationship with him when Sarah blurted out his betrayal.

Caleb was manipulative with a narsisstic personality. He did not help her because he would be charged. He was not capable of any relationship which did not benefit him. I am not sure if Noa regretted their relationship

Noa is a convicted murderer but you still care about her. That's a pretty amazing accomplishment for a novel. I had hoped that she would be able to have a good relationship with her father and that he had good intentions. Alas, all of the other comments are probably correct. Caleb really was not capable of putting anybody else's needs ahead of his own.

I didn't believe the part of the storyline that alluded to Noa's want/need for a relationship with her father. I don't think she actually wanted to be that close to him. Nor do I think she really felt she needed a "relationship" with her father, as it seemed she had pretty much written him off. The fact that she wound up in Philly for college seemed like a red herring in the story. IMHO, she never to try to find her father, and never seemed to connect with him on anything other than a very superficial level. As far as why he didn't help her at the trial....obviously Marlene had a major influence on that decision. And, I don't think he really felt the need to defend Noa, because she was taking the blame for him killing Sarah. Narcissistic, irredeemable spineless sociopath.

Caleb was a spineless individual, a liar as testified to by the many, many lies he told Noa. He had no concern for anyone other than himself and that included Sarah. I don't think Noa had any real desire to have a relationship with her father but she was such a weak individual that she pretty much went along with what anyone else persuaded her to do.

I didn't have any real feelings or sympathy for Noa. I couldn't understand her reluctance to testify in her own behalf at the trial and I certainly didn't understand why she didn't explain what really happened, including Marlene's involvement. Since Marlene was a powerful individual it may not have been believed but I just could not understand her willingness to just sit back and do absolutely nothing.

Caleb was spineless and in the end he protected himself. I think he cared about Noa but cared about himself even more.

I want to think Caleb was unable to act because of the situation he got himself into. I want to think he was paralyzed by indecision and guilt and thus did nothing. That is the only way I can understand his character, but maybe he was just selfish.

Caleb did not want to go to prison. That is why he offered no help to Noa.

Caleb was afraid something bad would happen to him if he helped Noa. He had tried to change his life and reconnect with his daughter, but in the end he was too cowardly. I don't think Noa regrets her relationship with her father. In my experience, most people want o know their parents no matter what.

He was too weak to resist Marlene's manipulation. The only character who was strong enough to not cave to Marlene was Noa. Her resistance was passive rather than aggressive and it cost her her life.

That's a point of view I hadn't considered. I think you've got something there.

RE: Why did Caleb not help Noa at trial? Does Noa regret her relationship with him?

I am sorry to be joining this discussion at such a late date, but this was a question that I kept asking myself. I kept wanting him to redeem himself by thinking of someone other than himself and his own life, but it never happened. Like many other people who responded, I believe that he was a narcissist, if not just plain evil. He did what was best for him at that's all there was to it. The second part of this question seems like it could have been a question in its own right, but connecting it to the first question I can't think of any possible reason for her NOT to have regretted this relationship.

Caleb always took care of Caleb first. He thought a relationship with Noa would make him feel better about himself and give him connection to her life. It was never about what might be good for her and that was obvious right to the very end .
