Letters to the Lost
by Iona Grey
Days of future past (4/7/2015)
I really enjoyed this book. It was well written, with many lovable characters that you wanted to root for. I loved Dan and Stella's story, even though it was devastatingly sad for the both of them. Stella was a very brave and even though her life wasn't what she hoped, she found an outlet for her love and was able to make wonderful changes in the lives of many. I really think this would make a great bookclub book and is definitely for the romantics out there.
First Frost
by Sarah Addison Allen
magical (11/16/2014)
I love Sarah Addison Allen. A few years ago, I found Garden Spells and fell in love. I went to the book store and read all of the rest of her books. I gave them away and all my friends and especially my daughter are now fans. When I received this book as a First Impressions book I was elated. I wasn't disappointed. To go back to the Waverly family from Garden Spells was a treat. The book made me want to stop thinking of what is impossible and think only of possibilities.
Walk Me Home
by Catherine Ryan Hyde
Walk Me Home (5/11/2013)
Carly and Jen are very smart teenage girls. They are independent and extremely street smart and at the same time they are vulnerable and loving. To even have a plan like theirs is remarkable. I thought that the book was interesting and the ending was very good, though I kind of guessed what had happened to Jen. I recommend this book to all readers of Catherine Ryan Hyde.
Close My Eyes
by Sophie McKenzie
Good beach read (5/11/2013)
I enjoyed reading "Close My Eyes". It kept me reading even though I wanted to go to sleep. It moves quickly and I wanted to be the main character's best friend. It is a book you think about long after it has been read. I don't usually read many thrillers, but I would if they were as well written as this one.
Golden Boy
by Abigail Tarttelin
Golden book (1/8/2013)
Told from different perspectives, this book is golden in many ways. Max is a popular high school boy. He is captain of his football league, girls are drawn to him, he gets good grades, and he is kind even to his annoying little brother. But Max has a secret, he is intersex. He is exactly half and half. The story goes deeply into his and his family's feelings about this. His family and him haven't spoken about this situation at all and this fact creates most of the dramatic situation here. Even though I learned a lot about people who are intersex, I learned a lot more about communication within families. How having a secret, even though you are trying to protect someone, will blow up in your face at the most inopportune times. I highly recommend this book. It is easy to read and not forgettable.
All You Could Ask For
by Mike Greenberg
all you could ask for (11/19/2012)
I enjoyed reading this book but I would have liked it to be a little deeper. The characters are interesting but a little too cliche. All of them were beautiful, rich, and successful. On a story about breast cancer I would have liked at least one of them to have had money difficulty, been in a bad relationship, or at least had to struggle with kids and family. These women were all kind, smart, and the type of women I only see when I open the society page of the newspaper. Breast cancer hits all women and a lot of them don't have the resources that these women had. The book would have been greatly improved by the addition of someone who wasn't rich or beautiful.
Shine Shine Shine: A Novel
by Lydia Netzer
Shining on what is normal (6/21/2012)
I enjoyed this book very much. It took me a few chapters to understand the characters. It is about a family full of very unusual people. Maxon is autistic and speaks in the language of numbers. Sunny was born bald without a hair on her body. They find each other and what develops is a wonderful love story. As the couple try to find their way through life, Sunny craves normalacy and what she finds when she finally opens her eyes is that nothing is normal. To be yourself is the best the best you can be. I highly recommend this book.
Wife 22: A Novel
by Melanie Gideon
omg/lol (4/4/2012)
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it is a bit of fluff, but such an enjoyable bit of fluff. I really enjoyed the way it was written in internet speak. It had facebook statuses, google searches, tweets, and facebook chats. It was romantic and had a lot of laughs. I especially enjoyed the gap between the generations. Alice the heroine was interesting and well written. It will be a very good beach read this summer.
Losing Clementine: A Novel
by Ashley Ream
a good read (2/19/2012)
Everyone will not understand this book, Losing Clementine. It is a story for our time era. Mental illness has soared in the last few decades and we are all trying to find the silver bullet to help these people. At one time in this story, Clementine described her illness like a black monster, not allowing her to breathe. I have heard many times of the dark monster descending upon a person and sometimes never letting them go,encouraging them to want release. This book describes this very well and makes the character sympathetic. I kept rooting for Clementine all through out the story. I strongly recommend this book and hope to read more from Ashley Ream.
Wayward Saints
by Suzzy Roche
What a fun novel! (11/28/2011)
I was excited about reading this book and I wasn't disappointed. I felt that the characters were very vivid and I felt for all of them. I especially liked the character of Thaddeus who came into Mary's life at the right time to help her through her life's journey. It just proves that angels come in all shapes and sizes and genders. Not a lot of action in this story but a lot of thought and feeling. The characters stayed with me for a long time after. Three cheers for Suzzy Roche and I hope to read more from her.
Before Ever After: A Novel
by Samantha Sotto
Promising new author (6/25/2011)
I liked the story and the premise of the book but I wasn't drawn into the story as much as I wanted to be drawn in. I hated when the story left the present and went to the historical. I know that others liked the historical but all of the historical stories were sad and tragic. I wanted the fantasy, the romance, and the stories of the people on the tour. I loved the characters of Shelly and Max. I think I would have fallen in love with Max also. Shelly was strong but weak enough to fall in love with. It is a good summer read and I hope many people will read this because it is a fun little book.
Outside Wonderland: A Novel
by Lorna Jane Cook
Wonderland of a read! (2/19/2011)
I really enjoyed this book. It was slow going at first but soon I found myself thinking about the characters and was excited to return to them. The characters were well written and made me smile and cry. Choices were made and consequences were paid but all the way through it they supported each other even when they were having a hard time themselves. I loved the fact that their parents were in heaven watching and hoping they would make the right decisions. It gave me hope and was a very encouraging novel. I think it would be a good novel for bookclubs and a fun one for mothers and daughters to read together.
