What is the difference between complacency and compliance? If you don't speak and act out against wrong, does that mean you are supporting it?

Central to the story in Only the Beautiful is the recurring theme of complacency versus compliance. What is the difference, in your opinion? If you don't speak and act out against wrong, does that mean you are supporting it?

RE: What is the difference between ...

Complacency and compliance are often used interchangeably, but there are important distinctions between the two.

Complacency refers to a state of self-satisfaction, contentment, and a lack of motivation to improve. It implies passivity - going along with the status quo without questioning it.

Compliance, on the other hand, refers to abiding by rules, regulations and requests from an authority. It does not necessarily imply agreement with those rules, just obedience.

This question of "If you don't speak and act out against wrong, does that mean you are supporting it?" is difficult to answer. It depends on the specifics. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Compliance means a person is actively willing to conform to rules. Complacency means a person just accepts the status quo. I think it is more passive than compliance.

RE: What is the difference between ...

Compliance is an action of conforming to or completing requirements. Complacency is passive and involves accepting information without questioning either because one doesn’t know questions should be asked or because one doesn’t want to ask questions. Questions might not be asked out of fear or due to having insufficient knowledge or because someone does not see the potential danger that lays ahead. Essentially, having no skin the game.
Generally speaking, a person may be against something (such as when Hitler annexed Austria), but not speak out because the reality of that action does not impact them directly at that time. In hindsight, there were many who wished they spoke out prior to Hitler’s subsequent invasion of other countries. Their failure to speak out or act in no way meant they supported Hitler. Many acted complacent because they failed to understand the magnitude of Hitler’s beliefs and actions taken in support of his beliefs.
It takes a lot of moral courage to speak up against wrong, especially when you are someone speaking up quickly and/or one of the few speaking up.

Complacency implies a lack of motivation to either investigate an issue or to ignore it all together. Compliance is following a set of guidelines or rules without deviation. Compliance is generally enforced by an outside entity, to which the compliant are linked by force or by a subservient position within an organization.

Complacency is accepting the status quo and not challenging it. Compliance is also going with the flow, but does not have the implication of acceptance. Not speaking out against wrongdoing doesn't necessarily mean agreement, but it certainly suggests acceptance. Things can't change if no one has the guts to challenge them.
