Although I understand the secrecy, I do not understand why he let anyone treat her like a servant, and when June's mother banished her from the dining table and treated her horribly I think he should have put an end to that behavior - he wasn't so far gone at that point. The threat of people finding out about their marriage was real but Apatha seemingly willingly becoming a servant, casting of their child, that was horrible and inexcusable. Their marriage could not have been so wonderful with all the constraints put upon them.

I agree with ruthiea - I do not understand how Apatha could endure the treatment and allow June's mother to become the "mistress" of her home. But it was implied that June had very little money to keep the home up after Apatha left. That seemed like it would have been a very cruel surprise to June's mother, but ultimately hurt June and her family.

The consequences became very negative for them after June and her awful mother moved in. Lemon struck me as very feeble by that time, since June's mother was making the decisions about when he was present of absent from their company. I don't understand nor approve of their treatment of Apatha's son.

They were just passive participants in this huge drama, they let everyone else live real lives around them while they receded into the background. They were characters in the way that Two Oaks was one- they influenced people's lives, they colored it, but they weren't really living.

I guess they were so afraid of anyone discovering they were married or even in a relationship, that they went overboard playing the roles of employee and employer. The fact that they had sent their son away to be raised elsewhere was a bit unbelievable, but maybe they were worried it would be too much for him to bear.
