RE: Why do you think the bookshop ...

I think the bookstore appears to someone if it feels the person is sympathetic and will appreciated it.

If the bookstore thinks a person is not sympathetic and potentially appreciative, ti will simply stay hidden.

I do think the back story of the man who first owned the magical store could have been developed more--it's a charming (no pun intended) story and it only got a brief mention.

I think one needed to be worthy by the bookshop's standards. First of all you must, absolutely, be an ardent book lover, and secondly, believe in its existence.

It was visible to those who were open to the possibility of such a bookstore. I love Cynthia's answer.

The fact that only certain people can see the bookstore provides the reader with a clue as to the character of the those who “see”. They are kindred spirits who value and appreciate books.

I agree with Cynthia, the bookstore chooses who is allowed to experience and become the next caretaker I think that the care and depth provided in developing the bookshops "character" was much more full and interesting than the people in the story.

I think it was visible only to those who loved and were nourished by books, and were open to adventure and new experiences.

That’s the magical part of the bookstore. If you are deemed worthy and love books you find the bookstore. Although my local library doesn’t disappear and appear, it’s my magical place.

It was revealed to those whom the bookshop trusted and who held the same values/ideals about books.

I think that the bookshop appears to those who not only can appreciate it and are in tune with it but who are in need of it. It restores hope to those people when they desperately need hope.
