    Fascinating Book!
Our last dog was a black lab, Max, who was also a member of our family. This made this book especially interesting to me. As I read the book, I kept thinking of words that it made me feel. The first was, "Oh, my!", due to all that happens in the book. The others were: Joy, Sympathy, Shock, Sorrow, Laughter...and last, but not least, WOW!

I think all animal lovers would like the book, and I'd encourage anyone to read it.

    Not just another dog book
I love dogs and I love reading. I've read a lot of books, fact and fiction, about dogs. "Ever by my Side" did not disappoint me. I stopped holiday cleanup, regular house chores, sleeping......to read it as quickly as possible, while yet savoring the skill with words that Dr. Trout gives us in this book. Being a lady of advanced years, I appreciated writing such as this, ".....messing with the collage of mental snapshots pinned to the corkboard of our memory." The book does not dwell on any one animal, dog, cat or otherwise, but takes us through the ups and downs of Dr. Trout's life from childhood to adulthood and gaining his veterinary degree. We see him interact with his parents, their dogs, then his life as a young adult, marriage and fatherhood, all of the milestones we as readers have passed through or look forward to. No, it's not just another dog book; it is much more than that. The story of a man who has lived a day to day life that includes the animals whom he has loved and the people with whom he has shared that life. A book worth settling in with a cup of something hot, no interruptions and the joy of reading.

Ever By My Side will ever be by my side
Veterinarian Dr Nick Trout tells his life story through the animals that he has known and mostly loved. We hear of young Nick's encounters with animals and we meet the pets that became part of his family and the fabric of his life. Through these animals he learns to appreciate all the relationships in his life and his chosen profession.

I loved this book. It was totally readable and compelling. At times I laughed out loud and other times I quietly cried.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, animal lover or not.

I plan to read this author's other works.

    Ever By My Side
EVER BY MY SIDE is a book for all who have ever had a love affair with a dog. It is written with such love and tenderness, I felt I was living those days and years starting with Marty, Cleo and most of all, Patch. Here are all the joys and sorrows, the understanding, and most of all, the unconditional love that comes into our lives along with a dog and how it carries over to our human companions. I know I will read it again and laugh and, undoubted, cry at all the same places. . .so much does Dr. Nick touch the heart.

Another Heart-warming gem by Dr. Nick Trout!
Author/veterinarian Dr. Nick Trout gets better with every book! I've read all three of his memoirs of his life as a veterinary surgeon, but they truly are much more than that. His books teach us about love, responsibility and that special bond between each human and their pet. Many reviewers have compared his books to the "All Creatures Great & Small" author, James Herriott, and in this, Trout's own memoir of his growing up in the English country side, not far from the real life country doctor himself; you find out that actually meeting him at a young age, played a huge part in cementing Nick's determination to turn his love of animals, and his desire to heal and better their lives, into his own life time career.
The stories of his own pets while growing up, the part they all played in his early family, as well as those he acquired for his own children and how they changed their lives is heartwarming beyond words! You'll want to read his books again and again, and then buy them as gifts, which I have done many times!

    ever by my side
I enjoyed this book. The author knows animals as you can tell by reading the book . he seems to know what they are thinking as well as his human characters. I had a German Shepherd when I was a small child. but it liked my brother better. it is true that they are a one person dog. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals and is planning to become a veterinarian. or work with or just love animals.

    Ever By My Side
A thoughtful memoir about a man, his pets, and the effect they had on each other's lives. Although Dr Trout is a vet, his experiences and his family's are very much like those of the rest of us -- dogs who pull on the leash, cats and dogs who misbehave and love us despite our shortcomings. I have not read his earlier works about his vet practice, but am now interested in finding those as well. Highly recommended for all animal lovers.
