    A Must read!
I laughed. I cried. How did Dr. Trout see into my life? I enjoyed the human characters but his portraits of the animals toughed my heart deeply. I could go on and on but I can only say “YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!” As a side note – this book saved my stepdaughter’s dog. He had just dug up my flower and winter vegetable garden. I locked myself in the bedroom and read this book nonstop. It saved her dog and my sanity. I haven’t decided about her. Please read this book!

    A good story......
I loved this book. The story contained the full gamut of feelings, from sadness, to laughter, to love, to caring. I particularly enjoyed the parts referring to clinical judgments; the why-fors so to speak. It will be enjoyable for all animal lovers as well as those who may be interested in acquiring a pet. This book is, and will be, a most favorite of mine.

    A Doggone GREAT book
Just when I thought no one knew the secrets I shared with my two labs, Trout's novel exposes the universal truth about all dogs and dog lovers - all
you REALLY need to know about unconditional love can be found in Ever By My Side. I "double dog dare" any reader to stop after page one...

    A book about love
This book arrived the day after my darling 12-year-old cat died. Fran and I adored each other and the prospect of reading a book about pets made me a little nervous, but it quickly became apparent that this lovely book is about much more than a veterinarian's experiences with his pets. It’s about relationships between species and between generations, and how sometimes we need to experience something in order to truly appreciate what others have gone through.

    Animal Tales
What a delightful book. Perhaps it is because the author is of my age and many things he talks about are easily understood and remembered. If you love animals you will love this book. It is full of stories about animals and at the same time you learn a great deal about the author's life. It doesn't have quite the scope of the James Herriot books but it definitely fits close to it. It is a book for young and old, for those who perhaps once wanted to be vets or even for those who are vets today. Keep a box of tissues close by because you are going to feel the tears at times but just sit back and enjoy.

    Great Read!
I loved it! It's a memoir, it's about animals, and it was a delight to read. The book is witty, insightful and heartwarming. It is full of incidents from the Dr.'s life as well as incidents from various animals lives.....some producing tears and many producing laughter. I couldn't put it down!

    Ever By My Side
You might think that a book about a veterinarian would have a limited audience. That's not the case with "Ever By My Side" It not only deals with how one man is affected by the animals in his life but how it lead him to choose his career. I t also explores his relationship with his father who had a different life plan for Dr. Nick. It shares the impact of animals on Nick's children.

The writer's style is conversational and makes you want to listen to all he has to say. Some of his stories are funny and remind you of the animals in your own life. I couldn't put this book down, I loved it.
