RE: Was there a particular quote or passage that struck you as memorable?
On page 61 Cadie said:”His eyes were the shocking blue of the ocean in the movies. The color seemed to churn like water as he stared at her. Cadie held her breath, afraid she smelled like the peanut butter she had spread on an English muffin that morning “.
I absolutely love the imagery of the ocean in someone’s eyes and the sense of smelling like peanut butter on an English muffin.

RE: What's more important, friendship or family?
I think that close friends are family. Blood may define blood lines but history and open heartedness are bonds that last.

RE: What were your initial theories about the secrets Cadie and Daniela share? How did your impressions of the characters shift as more revelations were uncovered?
(Spoilers in this comment) When we first found out about the gun and the body and then met the Summer Kid, I thought Cadie and Daniela may have accidentally killed him somehow. When we found out they were merely witnesses to a crime their behavior started to make a lot more sense to me--neither of them really seemed like the type to cover up a murder they committed, but keeping quiet about something they heard (rather than saw) made a lo more sense to me.

RE: Was there a particular character you most identified with? Which one, and why?
No - there weren't. That is the only real down for me in this book...there was never a character I cared about...I didn't dislike them I just didn't really identify with anyone. I wanted to care about Cadie and her commitment but it just didn't happen for me.

RE: Conflict
Tough question. I do not think one is more important than the other. I think they both serve different purposes in our lives and are meant to complement the other.

RE: As you read the book's closing paragraph, what did you predict for the future of Cadie's world (and ours)?
There are people who will do what it takes to protect our environment. It fosters a. Feeling of hope.

RE: What did the novel help you see in the intricately interconnected worlds outside your door? Did you learn anything new? What most surprised you?
As an educator, I learned a lot about the beetle and the connection to forest fires. The description of the New Hampshire forests was so detailed and lyrical...I loved it . We are all tightly woven together but the selfishness of some are ripping those connections apart.
