RE: What are some of the different lengths characters go to in this novel in order to protect their families? Did you agree with the choices that they made?
Even though I didn't agree with her actions, I felt sorry for Dolores because of the predicament she found herself in, but it was unfair of her to place the burden of that secret upon Cadie, which affected her her whole life and destroyed her friendship with Daniela. However, I understand Dolores' need to protect her family.

RE: Overall, what do you think of Waiting for the Night Song (no spoilers in this thread please)
I found the book difficult to read. I agree with Amber. There were so many threads that were not fully developed. The conservation issue could have been a central part of the story but really got lost!

Forest fires
Cadie and Piper have 2 different views of forest fires. Cadie believes forests must be cleared of underbrush and dead trees to prevent the destruction of acres of trees. Piper believes we let nature take its course and new trees will return. Explain which perspective you think is the best.

I really had a hard time getting into this book, to be honest I was a bit disappointed. I felt that I was being "Talked down to" by the author and really didn't connect to the characters. Just wasn't for me, but not all books are for everyone I guess.

I have to agree with most of the people here. It was okay--mildly entertaining, but I was underwhelmed. Nothing about the story felt entirely fleshed out so I did have a hard time connecting with any of it. It's not a book I would recommend to a friend.

RE: What contemporary books do you think would be on Sal's reading list? How important is it for young readers to read from a diverse list of authors, including authors who represent their own identities?
Sal was a very well informed/in tune teen. She almost seemed wise beyond her years. She was a very strong minded teen.

The Hate U Give
The Poet X
Clap When You Land
This is My America (Kim Johnson)
Stamped
Find Layla
Watch Over Me
You Should See Me in a Crown
Kids should read a real variety of genres about people from different backgrounds. Schools have required reading, but every good English teacher should supplement what’s required, at least with a good list of suggested young adult and appropriate adult literature.
