RE: How do you live your life knowing that you could lose everything and everyone in the next moment by being deported for a crime that you didn't commit?
Yes, one day at a time and appreciate the good that has happened.

RE: What memories did Cadie and Daniela's underground library stir in you? Which of your own favorite books would you have wanted to share with the Summer Kid?
I read anything I could check out of our school library; literally, anything I could get my hands on. When we started reading novels in class, I complained like all my classmates, but secretly I was doing the happy dance! I loved them all.
I would have loved to have a friend to do a secret book share with.

RE: How do you generally feel about authors writing about experiences they have not lived through? Have you read any books by Latinx authors with similar themes or plots that you would recommend reading in tandem with this book?
I don't have a problem with it if the author has done their research. Maybe the author learns something in the process, maybe their readers do too.

RE: Cadie and Piper have 2 different views of forest fires. Which perspective do you think is the best?
I believe Cadie has the best viewpoint. She understands what has to be done so that the forests can survive. She is using the scientific approach and I think Piper is using a more sentimental and caring approach.

RE: Why do you think Daniela trusted Cadie with the secret that her family is undocumented? In general, why do you think people feel compelled to share their secrets even when there could be serious repercussions?
Secrets are hard to keep. Daniela needed someone to confide in and she trusted the bond she had with Cadie.

RE: Overall, what do you think of Waiting for the Night Song (no spoilers in this thread please)
To be honest, reading this book was a chore. It was rather slow and wordy. I also had difficulty engaging with the characters. The story lines were too diverse and character development was rather weak. In the writing I could detect a glimmer of Kingsolver, but the glimpse made it all the more unsatisfying. I would not recommend this book, it was quite a disappointment.

RE: Was there a particular quote or passage that struck you as memorable?
[Cadie] .....”didn’t know how to pray to whatever Dolores believed in, so instead she called on the highest power she knew-the forest- to keep her and her secrets safe.”
