RE: How does the title, My Broken ...
Growing up with two languages would enrich one's life as well as pose some problems. I've become friends with a number of Turkish immigrants living in OK. We talk about the language barriers and how to overcome them. These conversations enrich all of us even though I don't speak Turkish. In My Broken Language, Quiara must learn to live in both languages.

RE: Overall, what do you think of "...
I was surprised how much I loved it! I get tired of memoirs and survival stories. This one wasn't. It was fresh and introduced me to the author in the bigger picture of her environment.

RE: Overall, what do you think of "...
I loved her descriptions of her family and neighborhood. As she moves from "home" to her Dad's, to Yale, and to Providence, she takes you with her, and she doesn't make it easy. She expresses her fears, her awakenings, and the heart that she takes us back to - her mom and abuela.
This excellent memoir provides a ladder - a link - a hope - that, if you find a focus, and then work at it, your world becomes a place you love!

RE: How do you think "home" ...
Her relationship with her father and his unloving wife, who certainly made her feel like an outcast, was a struggle for her. Her maternal family was home, with all the many relatives. She loved them and often felt guilty over the opportunities that she had and they did not. She was a caring loving person. Home to me is family. Home is living in my 1970’s house where I raised my two sons, many dogs and cats and all the memories.

RE: Quiara reveres her mother. What...
I often find myself envious of women who have close relationships with their mother. My mother and I have been estranged since she left me and my family when I was eleven years old. I'm sixty.
