A. E. Hotchner Biography

Aaron Edward "A.E." Hotchner was an American editor, novelist, playwright and biographer. He was the author of many books and plays, including Papa Hemingway, Sophia: Living and Loving, The Day I Fired Alan Ladd, Paul and Me: 53 Years of Adventures and Misadventures with My Pal Paul Newman (2010) and E.O.J. in the Morning, G&T at Night (2013).

He was born in St. Louis and attended Soldan High School. He graduated from Washington University Law School in 1941, practiced law briefly, then served in the Air Force as a military journalist. After his stint in the armed forces, Hotchner met Ernest Hemingway, and the two spent the next 14 years as close friends. Papa Hemingway, his 1966 biography of Ernest Hemingway, whose work he had adapted for plays and television.

With his friend Paul Newman, Hotchner cofounded Newman's Own, Inc., which has donated more than $200 million to charity from its line of foods. Hotchner was honored with a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.

He died in February 2020 aged 102.
