Mary Ann Shaffer worked as an editor, a librarian, and in bookshops. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was her first novel. Her niece, Annie Barrows, is the author of the childrens series Ivy and Bean, as well as The Magic Half.
Mary Ann died in February 2008, knowing that her novel was to be published in English and in translation in many languages throughout the world.
