Every week seems to bring news of more bookstores closing, not least this week with the news that Borders will definitely be going into liquidation and many of its remaining stores will close. So here to brighten your Friday is a happy little time-lapse video of a new bookstore going from empty to open in less than 80 seconds.
The store is Half Price Books' 113th location in San Antonio; and before purists moan that it's not a local independent, based on their Wikipedia profile Half Price Books seem like a pretty good bunch: The largest family owned chain of new and used bookstores in the USA, founded by Ken Gjemre and Pat Anderson who opened their first store in a laundromat in Dallas in 1972, stacking the shelves with 2000 of their own books. They seem to have a socially conscious mentality and boast of generous employee benefits including affordable healthcare and a matched 401k plan.
