History detail, and a nice one to include not just for versimilitude, but for making a subtle point about the layers of social convention and bias that this novel reveals. Many Russians in Paris in that era (and in the art world) were Jews, who were subject to a lot of discrimination and persecution in Russia at the time. And of course bigotry existed everywhere, as it still does.

It was an anti-Semitic comment. If you recall, Mrs. Fuller was Rose's aunt. At the funeral Tanya offered to buy Rose's paintings sight unseen. Mrs. Fuller seemed think that Tanya might be taking advantage of her and asked if she was Jewish. There are still people in the world today who think all Jews are wealthy, control the financial institutions, and will always try to cheat you in financial matters.
