No, I don't like to mark up books but I did note the author's Postscript comments about writing a book to create a different impression of Iran.

Yes, on the dedication page she writes: You will find that most things in life are more complicated than they appear, yet I wish you many simple, beautiful moments. May you always remember your hearts.

It was strange how memories worked. The harder you chased them away, the more tightly they grasped you, and always at the wrong time.

I didn't note particular passages but certain statements like the these at the end of the book:
"...the nice thing about happiness you can take it anywhere..."
"...there is one sweet taste that will remove your sorrow ...Gratitude..."

I had two more additional quotes that stuck with me:

"All diplomats everywhere compromise the end goal to achieve that one step that make them look good.'

No one can fix you but yourself.

Yes, I highlight in light pencil in my book and at times make a note in the margin. Most of my books I pass on to my daughter and she so loves reading the notes I make.

"...She no longer had to battle against the pervasive feeling of loneliness. She only had to surrender to the good, whatever that was at whatever time. The other stuff, all the hurt, the offenses-those were just stones bouncing off stone. They didn't matter much." p. 376

No, I hardly ever highlight passages. There were a few phrases that stood out when I read them; overall, I thought many parts of the books were boring.

Yes - several -
When one starts a new chapter, the page shouldn't be noisy with commentary, but white and crisp, ready for one's best self.
~~~~~~
A grand vision, but it's so hard to drop the baggage.
"You would think the joy of teaching would be sufficient to inspire them< Farnoosh said.
Farzad smiled, "I'm not sure you would think the same if your husband was taking home their salary."
~~~~~~~~
Underappreciation of teachers is universal.

So many, especially from Jalalod-Din. This one is a favorite:
“There is one sweet taste that will immediately remove you sorrow… Gratitude.”

I thought Jalalod_Din had some beautiful thoughts, but the one that stuck out was "There is one sweet taste that will immediately remove your sorrow...Gratitude". Very true.

I didn't make notes but I loved the descriptions of Amina's village and the rose farms. It sounds stunning and idyllic. It's on my bucket list!

At a meeting, Farzad tells the others, "Such a government is a consequence of a sickness whose symptoms, greed and a lack of empathy, spread like a contagion among those in control." Seemed kinda familiar...
