What do you think gives Julia the strength to flee? Why aren't others (Winston, Ampleforth) able to do the same?

It may have to do with the fact that she didn't grow up in the city and also spent time in the prole section of town, which let her see that other options existed. It probably helped, too, that she had a friend who mentioned it as a possibility. I think the men she was involved with lacked the imagination to believe there could be any other way of life.

Julia carries not only an unborn child but the memory of her own mother, the strength she gained from that love, and with it, her mental strength, quickness and ability to adapt to loss. She has a strong will and an instinct for survival. She has practical intelligence—she’s very observant, for example, and sees through BS, shall we say. She’s willing to take calculated risks while being open to possibilities—not in service to theories but to her own immediate needs.

Some individuals have stronger survival instincts. Julia grew up in the country, survived the Ministry of Love, and decided to take a chance on freedom. Perhaps she thinks that nothing worse could happen & risk of death would be preferable to her current circumstances. We see that in the news every day, such as the man seen grabbing the wheels of the jet during the evacuation of Kabul. The tiny chance of escape despite the 99% chance of death was a better option than staying and living under Taliban rule.

Julia had a strong urge to survive and had been surviving since she was a child and had no family that she was leaving behind.
Also she had survived the worst and she might as well see if there was an alternative way she could live.
Julia had been pushing the rules all her life.
Many do not flee because they understand how to life in the life of Big Brother and did not want to take the chance of life of the unknown.

“Raise a child to the age 5 and they will not depart from those teachings” says the Old Testament. Julia was about 12 when she lost both parents, but she knew what a freer life could be. She returned to those beliefs and desires when her efforts to live in the system failed horribly.

Julia was raised in the prole section of this world and so knew the relative freedom there. She now also knows some of the truth of the land she currently lives in. She knows there is something better out there and it is worth going for on her own. If she doesn't make it, it's better to try and fail than not to try at all.

I think the child she is carrying gives her the strength to flee. She knows the baby is the only thing keeping her from being executed. She also seems to want a life for her baby that is better than what she has. She also knows the truth behind the lies. She is looking for something more.
