RE: What makes Joey and Leela so ...

At times, I felt the romance was a bit stretched but then I remembered my own story with my husband which wasn't too different in terms of timing. I think it was the case of the right person at the right time and the right set of circumstances. It started out without the pressure of thinking it could be a long-term thing and I think that took some of the pressure off of the early getting-to-know you stage.

As two divorced parents they already had something in common. Neither seemed to harbour hostility towards their exes, and they both were financially stable, so right off the bat they had much in common. They both weren't looking for a relationship or marriage, so there was little pressure to impress. They were both close with their parents. After that it was a matter of getting to know one another and seeing if they enjoyed being together.

Quite honestly, it was a bit of a stretch to accept the speed with which their relationship blossomed in such a short time.

The fact that they were both divorced with children made them compatible. Have to agree that their relationship moved along very quickly, which was kind of unusual.

Agree that the relationship moved awfully quickly. Circumstances were unusual though on many levels. They (especially Joey) needed each other during a very stressful time and she was a special person.

I think they had quite a bit in common. Both were divorced, both had children, both had somewhat demanding careers. I also think they were both in a stage in their lives that just meshed. They had been single awhile, done the dating scene, and now perhaps, were more inclined to pursue a relationship with permanence in mind.

This doesn't quite answer the question, but I found their dating experiment very interesting and wondered if something like that actually works. I thought it was kind of cool (although not unexpected) that they ended up together even though they started out with the intention of the relationship ending once they returned to their respective homes up north.

I agree that Joey's and Leela's romance was a bit stretched but the timing of their visits and the Thomas' murder made the story work. There wasn't enough time to leisurely have a romance blossom, but having Leela there helped the plot. Joey's tryst with her that night left the "door open" for his dad to have opportunity (no pun intended) to be a suspect.

RE: What makes Joey and Leela so ...

Not sold on Joey and Leela’s romance. It seemed contrived to me, and its awkward beginning wasn’t cute, though I fathomed that was the intention. I could concede Joey and Leela are compatible, given they’re both divorced, had children, and parents in Beaumont, South Carolina, while they themselves lived in big cities in the north and behaved as if they did. Nothing leaps out at me as to how they brought out the best in each other, beyond learning to love again, I suppose. Their distinctions: Joey is Jewish, Leela is half-Indian. We gain plenty of Joey’s history, less of Leela’s, beyond her father’s love for collecting Civil War artifacts. It might have been interesting to know how Leela’s Indian mother ended up in Beaufort, or did I miss that?

RE: What makes Joey and Leela so ...

Joey and Leela are divorced from different spouses, so they have experienced love and marriage and loss, and both have children. They can relate to each other as adults who have juggled families and jobs. They are from out of town and have parents who want to see them get together. They put no pressure on each other to fulfill their parents' need to play Cupid. Leela is somewhat quicker to think of ways to solve who committed the murder. Joey gains courage from Leela's strength.
