Why do we say "Get Your Act Together"?

Presumably this expression has its roots in the theatre but it expanded into general use around about the 1970s.

For example, in 1978 The Manchester Guardian Weekly (UK) wrote [The reform policy on refugees] "merely requires that the administration get its act together".
