Michael Stern Hart, founder and head of Project Gutenberg, who many consider invented the ebook, died this week aged 64.
On July 4 1971, having been granted access to significant computing power at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he was inspired to type the text of a free printed copy of the U.S. Declaration of Independence into a computer, and to transmit it to other users on the computer network. Thus Project Gutenberg, recognized as one of the earliest and longest-lasting online literary projects, was founded.
