Indie bookstores continue to innovate, but are still suffering heavy financial losses

Apr 09 2020

Over these past weeks, indie bookstores across the USA have pivoted their businesses in myriad ways including web fulfillment, local delivery and curbside pickup. They are offering online storytime sessions, virtual author events, digital book clubs, live-streamed book recommendations and similar efforts.

However, they are still suffering extreme decreases in profit margins and largely insufficient online sales to make up for the decreased margins. The results are layoffs and furloughs at more than 80% of the bookstores who took part in Publishers Weekly's survey.
