13 arrested in assassination plot against Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk

Jan 30 2008

Thirteen people have been arrested in Turkey as part of an investigation into an ultra-nationalist gang reported to be planning the assassination of Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk, reports the Guardian newspaper. According to reports in the Turkish press, Pamuk was targeted as part of a campaign to sow chaos in preparation for a military coup, scheduled for 2009. The suspects now in custody include retired military officers and lawyer Kemal Kerincisz who has been instrumental in filing cases against a series of writers and intellectuals including Pamuk, Elif Shafak, Perihan Magden and the murdered journalist Hrant Dink.
