You may remember a few weeks ago I told you that the airport chain, Paradies, (with more than 390 stores) was testing a 'Read & Return' program where passengers could buy a book and return it to one of their bookstores at a later date for a 50% refund. Now Paradies are back in the news, having signed an agreement with the New York Times Company to create New York Times-branded airport bookstores and convert all its existing bookstores to the New York Times brand. Paradies already operates a number of branded stores, including CNBC, PGA Tour and Brooks Brothers, and is planning to open another 100 stores this year.
With annual revenues of close to $340 million, Paradies Shops operates 386 airport stores and has a range of branded stores, including CNBC, PGA Tour and Brooks Brothers. It also operates 12 stand-alone bookstores under various names and carries books at many of its other locations. Director of communications Bobbi Passavanti told PW Daily that the company, which added 72 stores last year, will open 100 stores in 2005, including New York Times-branded bookstores. Paradies is converting its existing bookstores to the New York Times brand "as feasible"; all future Paradies Shops bookstores will use the Times name.
