Anton Pavlovitch Chekhov was born in Taganrog, Russia in 1860. He began to write while studying medicine in Moscow, gradually taking up writing professionally. He died in 1904 of tuberculosis related symptoms. He is best remembered for his plays, The Seagull (1896), Uncle Vanya (1900), The Three Sisters (1901) and The Cherry Orchard (1904), and for his many excellent short stories.
