James A. Yorke (b. 1941) is a Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Physics and former chair of the Mathematics Department at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Together with co-author T.Y. Li, he coined the mathematical term "chaos" in a 1975 paper entitled "Period Three Implies Chaos". "Chaos" is a mathematical concept for systems that vary according to precise deterministic laws but appear to behave in random fashion.
