The Spare Room: A Novel
by Helen Garner
Almost got through it without crying (1/9/2009)
I read this book in a night, it's short and bittersweet. I'm not sure how I would have felt about this book if I hadn't had a sister die of cancer, it was more painful to read because I kept thinking of all she went through. I wish I could have cared for her like the author cares for her friend. Its not just a pretty story, its very truthful and shows all the emotions that caregivers go through. I recommend this book for a quick read and for its honesty and forthrightness.

Worth reading (7/11/2008)
I read the book excerpt on BrookBrowse and when I went to my local library, there it was on the new books rack. I was excited to be the first to check it out of the library. I pretty much read this straight through. The story told through the eyes of the daughter is mesmerizing, I even thought about what it would be like being mute myself as a protest against the stress and pressure of life. The ending was a bit predictable but all in all I'd say give a few days of your time, its worth reading.

Nancy Drew for Adults? (5/12/2008)
I did not dislike this book, I just didn't like it. I felt like I was reading a Nancy Drew book dressed up for adults. To be honest I did not finish reading the entire book, I quit half way thru. I feel bad because I love books, I love writers, I love Book Browse but this book was so simple, so elementary that I didn't want to spend any more time reading it when there are so many great books out there. I'm hoping someone else will give it a great review to balance this out. Its just not memorable AT ALL.

A thriller when you don't expect it (2/26/2008)
I loved this book, absolutely couldn't put it down. I'm a big fan of non-fiction history in fact just finished several books on World War II in both Pacific and European theaters, and didn't really expect to like this fictionalized version of events. But it is such a good book, great character development, a great story line and a surprise finish. You will be in great turmoil, not sure who to root for and your feelings and loyalty change from one chapter to the next. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
The View from Mount Joy: A Novel
by Lorna Landvik
Fun, Endearing and a Fast Read (9/20/2007)
This is not the kind of book I usually pick up and read, I've never read Lorna Landvik before. BUT I have to say I'm so glad I did. This book makes you laugh, cry and just holds your interest, I could hardly put it down. Joe is such an endearing character, you find yourself rooting for him at every turn in his life. The way the story evolves is just right. I highly recommend it to young and old - it does have some language and events of a sexual nature so keep that in mind (but they are in the context of the book so don't seem out of line). Do yourself a favor and curl up with this book, you'll be glad you did.
