What an outstanding book! I absolutely loved this multi-faceted story about four medical students, following them from their first years in medical school, then as they moved on to their internships, and finally as full-fledged doctors.

Each character's personality and …more growth as doctors, and as people, were smoothly crafted by the author.

Also woven into the book were small snippets of experiences of each of these characters throughout their journey as doctors; each one riveting and fascinating.

This author finely intertwined the lives of each character with the other, and in doing so, told a story about individuality, the pursuit of excellence, the desire to make a difference in the world, and the fragility and ultimate mortality of human life. (less)

What a great story! This novel was so endearing, from beginning to end. All of the characters were believable, the plot was realistic and kept my interest throughout, and the writing was superb. The story flowed smoothly and without any dry spells....quite remarkable!

This was a book unlike any I've ever read before. I was hooked within the first two pages. Less than two hundred pages all total, it's a short book but packed full of quirky humor that had me laughing out loud.

Centered around a divorced pair of attorneys, Lena is slightly …more neurotic and Nick is more than a little psychotic, but they have a connection that cannot be broken, despite their mutual "annoyance" of each other.

Another main character in the book is Sancho, a well-loved puppet (yes, a puppet) that Nick is so attached to, it's as if Sancho is a human, whom Nick calls an "unreal American". Sancho goes everywhere with Nick and seems to be an extension of Nick's psyche.

The story reads very fast with a lot of dialogue. There are parts that are hilarious and parts that are heartbreaking....but overall this book is an absolute winner. I love the author's offbeat wit and look forward to more in the future! (less)

After reading only the first few pages of this book, I doubted I'd be able to hold on to the end....however, once I continued on, I began to really get into it. The story reads like a dark, mystical, multi-faceted dream. It moves around unexpectedly to different times and …more places in the main character's experience, which at first bothered me, but then once I found the rhythm of the book, I was able to follow along without any trouble. Surprisingly, because this is not the usual genre of book I read, I found myself quite involved right through to the end. I'd say, in a broad sense, the book is about the psychic struggle between good and evil, light and darkness. I found it quite enjoyable. (less)
