The Secret of Everything
by Barbara O'Neal
Too much information (11/10/2009)
This book is a quick and enjoyable read, but I had the sense that the author was trying to fit too much into the story and the constant flashbacks were distracting.
The story is interesting but all over the place.
This would probably be a good beach or airplane book, but overall seemed scattered and the recipes seemed out of place.
The Last Bridge
by Teri Coyne
Promising premise doesn't pan out (6/14/2009)
The premise of this book was promising and I was immediately drawn into wanting to know more about the character and who the "he" was that was referred to in her mother's note. But, unfortunately, the story gets a bit muddled and having two characters with the same name was confusing. I thought the author tried to get too much into the story. Overall it was an OK read, but I thought it would have been better.
Sweet Mandarin: The Courageous True Story of Three Generations of Chinese Women and Their Journey from East to West
by Helen Tse
Interesting story but not enough details (5/21/2008)
This story of 3 generations of Chinese women is interesting but I felt that it glossed over big pieces of history, such as WWII. Additionally, this is a story that revolves around food, and, unfortunately, there is very little, other than Lily's curry that is explored or expounded upon. I had high hopes for this book, but it was just average.
The Pirate's Daughter
by Margaret Cezair-Thompson
Couldn't put it down (10/10/2007)
I am an avid Errol Flynn fan, Captain Blood is one of my all time favorite movies, so I just devoured this book. I loved the descriptions of Jamaica and the relationships between the mothers and daughters. Overall, I couldn't wait to come home each night and have this book waiting for me to dive into. The plot is compelling and the backdrop of Jamaica was beautifully described. I think you will really enjoy this juicy, engaging novel.
