Ever By My Side: A Memoir in Eight Acts Pets
by Dr. Nick Trout
Dog Lovers Can Relate (12/28/2010)
As a life-long dog owner, I was prepared to LOVE this book. After reading the first few chapters, I began to fear this autobiography was going to be just TOO adorable and folksy. Then the story further unfolded, and I began to relate to my own experiences in raising dogs, seeing myself in the characters, laughing at the way dogs have challenged my patience over the years, sniffling through the all too familiar end-of-life decisions. I was touched by the honest portrayal of his relationship with his father, and his mother’s ambivalence about having a dog (or two) in the house. This is a personal story that grows on you. It’s not a WOW, can’t wait to read another chapter kind of book. But you’ll find it touching, engaging and often quite real and funny. A life with dogs, you have to have a sense of humor!
The Scent of Rain and Lightning: A Novel
by Nancy Pickard
Hard to put this book down (2/4/2010)
Nancy Pickard never disappoints, and this new mystery is engaging and hard to put down. She develops the characters slowly, shifting your suspicions and yet surprising you at the end. She's a wonderful writer, moving the plot and the characters along, shifting the pace and the focus to keep painting the picture of relationships in a small town. Wonderful. Just write more like this Nancy!
Garbage Land: On the Secret Trail of Trash
by Elizabeth Royte
An Eye Opener (9/24/2008)
Elizabeth Royte takes a journey most of us never think about .. Where DOES the trash go? Who cares?? Well, as she does her personal journey and research, we learn we should ALL care. Reading the book resulted in some immediate changes (NOT taking plastic bags for things you can carry in your hand), reusing whatever you can, thinking about how much trash your family generates. AND thinking about the whole recycling thing.
I started this book because it seems like a quirky exploration ... then became convinced we are all a bit too blase about the trash, water bottles, toilet flushing without thinking about the "cost". You gotta read her newest book BOTTLEMANIA which is another very interesting journey. She's an engaging writing, real, funny, real writer. Reading this book will open your thinking to the possibilities. Definitely.
Green Monster: A Sam Skarda Mystery
by Rick Shefchik
Red Sox fans will want to love this book (7/14/2008)
Author Rick Shefchik isn‘t from Boston, but he definitely understands New England fans’ passion for baseball. The story lines of World Series, athletes and drugs, love, families, guns, murder, and power weave together in a fast tho often confusing pace. Red Sox fans will want to love this book but the characters are one-dimensional. This is not a brainy book, but it’s a fun and enjoyable mystery.
