Shine Shine Shine: A Novel
by Lydia Netzer
shine shine shine (6/13/2012)
this is different from any book have read.for review. at first I thought what is this? But as I got more into it I discovered it could be very much today's society, the husband going off into space thinking he could benefit mankind, the wife not understanding and thinking she needs him at hone to help take care of things there, and protect her since she had a few social issues including baldness and an autistic child - and one one the way. Maxon, her husband, is a strong person having endured many beatings as a child from his drunken father. This makes him able to endure it when things went wrong in the space capsule. He could endure physical and mental stress. I would recommend this book to book clubs as it is something different than normal reading and very interesting.
The First Warm Evening of the Year: A Novel
by Jamie M. Saul
the first warm evening of the year (4/30/2012)
It was a very easy read and it definitely held my attention to the end. I liked the idea; I didn't know how it was going to end until the end of the story. The book is full of emotion, as the characters try to figure out just how they fit together in the puzzle of life: Whether to hold on to the past all their life, or move on to new territory and love.
Until the Next Time: A Novel
by Kevin Fox
until the next time (2/18/2012)
I enjoyed this book. it is a good book for people who believe in karma and reincarnation. The book has many themes. The author does a good job presenting the political and religious struggles that has been going on for many years. Also has romance. I'm anxious for my sister-in-law, who is from Ireland, to read it and see what she thinks. When she came to America she thought lightning bugs were evil spirits. Think she would enjoy this book?
The Good Father: A Novel
by Noah Hawley
good father (12/18/2011)
This book really made me think about our society in America. There aren't very many marriages with kids that last and the kids spend their time going from one parent to the other plus grandparents and others. It's very confusing for them to know where they belong or if they really belong anywhere. That's what happened to Daniel once his mind was messed up so was his idea of right and wrong. I found the book very interesting though and could've passed for a true story.
Wayward Saints
by Suzzy Roche
wayward saints (11/12/2011)
I didn't like this book. the language was very offensive and even though I tried to overlook it I couldn't. I didn't like the theme or anything about it.
The Homecoming of Samuel Lake: A Novel
by Jenny Wingfield
The Homecomming of Samuel Lake (7/8/2011)
This book was action packed. I couldn't put it down.Even though I didn't like the unusual names of the characters I found the characters very believable. There was a lot of action in every chapter. There were not very many happy moments but full of life and living. This would be a good book for book clubs as there is a lot to discuss.
Jamrach's Menagerie: A Novel
by Carol Birch
jamrachs menangarie (2/5/2011)
8 yr old Jaffy is rescued from a Bengal tiger owned by Jamrach. Jaffy is hired to take care of Jamrach's animals and birds, along with another animal handler a boy named Tim. They have many adventures including a sea voyage. The book is full of tension, friendship, sacrifice and survival. I liked it.
Ever By My Side: A Memoir in Eight Acts Pets
by Dr. Nick Trout
ever by my side (1/3/2011)
I enjoyed this book. The author knows animals as you can tell by reading the book . he seems to know what they are thinking as well as his human characters. I had a German Shepherd when I was a small child. but it liked my brother better. it is true that they are a one person dog. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals and is planning to become a veterinarian. or work with or just love animals.
The Girl in the Green Raincoat: A Novel
by Laura Lippman
The Girl in the Green Raincoat (11/11/2010)
I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read and not a lot of pages. I would recommend it to everyone who enjoyed Rear Window, the book and the movie, as it is written in the same style; full of mystery, intrigue and imagination. The Main character Tess has some scary moments in her personal life as a result of her investigating but everything turns out ok for her.
City of Tranquil Light: A Novel
by Bo Caldwell
City of Tranquil Light (8/10/2010)
I wasn't sure at first if I liked this book. It was different than most novels. The characters and their trials and tribulations were so real and believable that I decided I liked it after all. also there is romance that is very real and facts about China in the 1900's that seem like real facts. I think I learned a lot about China. It was an interesting book and I would recommend it.
An Eagle Named Freedom: My True Story of a Remarkable Friendship
by Jeff Guidry
An Eagle Named Freedom (5/16/2010)
This is an inspiring true story about hope, love, trust.and life. A spiritual connection between a human and an eagle named Freedom The human was there for the eagle when she was brought to the wildlife sanctuary where the author volunteered. He was her caretaker and healer. When he was in pain from cancer hiss thoughts were of Freedom and that he must not give up but have the courage to fight and live and be together with his spiritual connection the eagle named Freedom.
Romancing Miss Bronte: A Novel
by Juliet Gael
good choice for book club selection (2/25/2010)
The characters and their lives are so real I felt I was there with them and shared their tribulations. Also shared Charlotte's joy getting her books published. Even though they lived a hard life this book was very well written. I would recommend it for book club discussions
The Secret of Everything
by Barbara O'Neal
the secret of everything (11/6/2009)
This book was an easy read.It contained mystery, adventure and believable characters and plot. I enjoyed it. However, the explicit sex scenes didn't add anything to the book. This could be toned down quite a bit.and still sound like love.
State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America
by Sean Wilsey, Matt Weiland
State by State (11/4/2009)
what I liked about the book was each author knew about the state he or she was talking about. It was very informative and at the same time reminded me of an illustrated version of John Steinbeck's travels with Charlie and a book by Charles Kuralt about different regions but neither author was from the states about which they talked. I really liked the cartoons of Oregon and Vermont. The photos, in the book also. When friends and I have talked recently about a state I get my book State by State and we read about it. Also I have promised several people they can borrow my book when I am finished and read it. they are very interested in that. I highly recommend this book.
